Though two separate surgical-medical specialties, Both Obstetrics and Gynecology are often combined together to form a single medical specialty. Both the specialties deal with the female reproductive organs. The major difference between the two is that while obstetricians deal with pregnancy and after child birth, gynecologists on the other end deal with non-pregnant states. An OB GYN specialist handles both the scenarios.
In the current medical care where specialization has become the key driving point, job opportunities for OB GYN specialists are also on the rise. They also collect a good salary package, though it may vary depending on their experience and expertise. Anyone with an MD, MS OBG, DNB –OBG or DGO degree is more preferred by top corporate hospitals in the country.
Master of Surgery in Obstetrics and Gynecology (MS OBG) is a career-oriented post graduate program of three years.
The basic qualification or eligibility for the MS OBG program is a bachelor’s degree in medical science or MBBS in India.

Diploma in Gynecology and Obstetrics (DGO) is a specialization post graduate diploma course of 2 years which is further divided into 4 semesters of equal duration.
Doctors who have completed their Bachelors in Medical Science (either MBBS or BAMS) with a minimum of 50% marks can take DGO.
DGO is a diploma course and is not equivalent to MD or MS which is a Master’s degree. The DGO course deals with only Obstetrics and Gynecology while MS and MD are available in various other medical specialties.
The first year is focused on the study of obstetrics while the second year deals with the study of gynecology.
Due to the rise in the demand in female health care and maternity care, a DGO degree can fetch a better pay scale and better job opportunities.
Diplomate in National Board (DNB) is a post graduate degree awarded by the National Board of Examinations (NBE) under the Union Ministry of Health, India.
The duration of the DNB course is three years.
DNB is a post graduate degree and is different from MS or MD which are master’s programs.
Unlike MS or MD candidates who undergo training at Medical Colleges, DNB candidates are trained at big private hospitals. Private DNB institutions like corporate hospitals give students better exposure to the latest equipment and practices.
Admission to DNB courses is based on a national level entrance examination called Diplomate of National Board – Centralized Entrance Test (DNB-CET).
National Board of Examination (NBE) conducts the DNB-CET test.
Compared to other entrance examinations, the DNB-CET test is easy to score high and get admission in your preferred institution and branch.
As majority of the government institutions consider DNB, both DNB and MS have nearly equal job opportunities. However, some institutions or top corporate hospitals insist on extra work experience to consider DNB.
