About the specialty
Gynaecology is a challenging specialty. Moreover, in the world of medicine, it is one of the most demanding ones. A gynaecologist concentrates on female health and engages in research regarding women’s health. Furthermore, the primary attention revolves around the state of the breasts and the female reproductive organs (vagina, uterus, and ovaries). In addition, they diagnose and cure gynaecological problems and guide patients to deal with contraception and reproductive issues.
A gynaecologist should be well versed in Gynaecology (female health), obstetrics (pregnancy and delivery), and reproductive issues. Besides, Gynaecology entails diagnosing, treating, and avoiding infections and diseases of women’s reproductive organs. Obstetrics, on the other hand, deals with maternity care.
The steps involved
1. Completion of senior secondary school
You will need to finish senior secondary sch0ol from an accredited board with a minimum of 50% in Physics, Chemistry, Biology/Biotechnology and English to be eligible for the NEET-UG entrance examination.
2. NEET-UG entrance examination
A career in the medical field is possible only if you work hard and prepare for the NEET-UG entrance examination. It is a single window entrance exam for admission to MBBS, BDS, BAMS, BUMS, BHMS and other undergraduate medical programmes at approved/recognized Medical/Dental/AYUSH and other Colleges/Deemed Universities/Institutes (AIIMS & JIPMER) in India. Once you clear the exam with the required mandate, you are further required to attend the counselling process to get into a medical college. In addtion an MBBS programme is a prerequisite for becoming a gynaecologist.
3. Completion of MBBS
Once you gain admission, finish your MBBS with a one-year rotational internship. Practice sessions, ward postings, seminars and conferences should be attended with at most attention. That will further help to lay a strong foundation for your career. While pursuing MBBS, you will be able to figure out the field in which you should take a postgraduate degree. Take up an obstetrics and gynaecology course. Furthermore, this will help you to get clarity regarding the subject and prepare for the PG entrance examinations.
4. NEET PG or INI-CET entrance exam
Clear the NEET PG or INI-CET entrance exam to get admitted into medical PG courses, . NEET-PG is a national-level entrance examination for admission to MS/MD/PG Diploma programmes at various government and private universities and INI-CET is a national-level entrance examination for admission to MS/MD/DM (6 years)/MCh (6 years) and MDS courses at the INI Institutes, which includes AIIMS, JIPMER, etc.
5. Choice of Specialization
Once you clear the NEET-PG exam with the stipulated score, choose MD/MS in Obstetrics and Gynaecology specialization at the time of counselling. You are supposed to complete your PG dissertation and junior residency during your master’s programme. In addition, a PG curriculum also entails conferences, symposiums, seminars, audits, clinical postings, clinical meetings etc.
6. Medical certification and license
Soon after your residency, secure your medical certification and obtain your license to practise as an OBGYN specialist.
7. Super Specialty Programs
You have many options like DM, DrNB, MCh or DNB to pursue. Admissions to a range of DM/MCh and DrNB Super Specialty programs are done after taking into account the marks and rank secured in the NEET-SS entrance examination.
