Learn About Obstetrics and Gynaecology
Doctors in obstetrics and gynaecology(OBG) are largely involved in the care of pregnant women and unborn children. They also attend to the sexual and reproductive health of women.
The role of Obstetrics and Gynaecology(OBG) combines medicine and surgery. When it comes to obstetrics, midwives are in charge of most of the low risk and uncomplicated deliveries. Gynaecology involves more complicated pregnancies and births. Procedures like caesarean sections also need to be dealt with.
Patients are women of all ages when it comes to gynaecology. Doctors will be involved in various things from keyhole surgery to providing advice on fertility treatment.
The appeal of this specialty is that every day in it is different. It is an around the clock role. A major aspect of the job is working along with a multidisciplinary team on a labour ward. You will have to be on-call and workout off hours at times.
Furthermore, you will be required to work on a shift system beginning with ward rounds. You will have to work in an outpatient clinic, an operating theater list or a specific clinic.
This is an interesting domain where techniques perfected over the last 30 years have improved the lives of women and babies.
